Parts . . .
Quality / Economy?

As you can see, the two rotors measure the same thickness, but one is mostly “air” and the other mostly metal. The economy rotor is cheaper for a reason: there’s less metal. Additionally, the quality of the metal may not be as good, and the fins in the vent may be arranged differently, or there may not be as many of them. These cost cutting measures save money. The economy rotor can’t shed heat as quickly, and therefor is more likely to warp and cause vibration when the brakes are applied.

Is the economy part always the wrong part to use? Not necessarily, it depends. A new part is always better than a worn out one. If you can’t afford the quality part, the economy one will get you by. Just don’t expect the same level of performance or longevity. If you’re only going to keep your vehicle for another year, the economy part may be the way to go. If you want a long-lasting repair, the quality part will save you money in the long run by not having to be replaced as soon.

At Alpine Auto Service, we always offer alternatives to fit your budget and situation. Due to the lower quality, we can only offer a 3 month/3000 mile warranty on economy parts. But the choice is always yours. Ask us for a price comparison.

Alpine Auto Service SAVES YOU MONEY by offering top quality parts or economy parts. While economy parts are less expensive, there’s a reason for that. And while we always offer you the choice, we want you to make an informed decision about the parts used in your repair.

Parts are parts, right? Well, not exactly. Today almost any part can be purchased in varying levels of quality. Over the last decade, there has been a tremendous increase in cheap parts, particularly from China. Buying a brand-name part does not guarantee a high quality part, as most manufacturers offer economy and quality lines of parts. Whether it’s a starter, radiator, muffler or transmission, there are always alternative parts. Take a look at the brake rotor below.
